Pariahuanca is one of the most remote coffee regions in Peru. Getting there is quite a journey—crossing the Andes at almost 5,000 meters before descending into the tropical valley of Vista Alegre. One of our producing partners here is Miguel Sanchez Roncal, whose farm clings to the mountainside at a staggering 2,350 meters, makingit one of the highest altitude coffee farms we’ve ever visited.
Miguel has diversified his production by growing passionfruit along wires high above his coffee plants. These plants provide extra shade for the coffee and encourage more species of birds and insects to populate the farm.
With staggering heights and beautiful vistas come large diurnal temperature swings, lengthening the hang time of the coffee cherries. Coffee here ripens slowly and produces incredible vibrant acidity and complex aromas. The result is a washed Bourbon variety like no other with notes of blackberry, grapefruit & honey
But beyond flavor, this coffee also shows what the Lykke Coffee project is all about. How, by building personal relationships, we can transition towards more sustainable coffee production for both people and planet.
